AB - This report deals with the manner in which several items of laboratory equipment were used in studying the performance of glass beads in paint. Wear and abrasion of beads and paint were studied using a type of surface abrasion equipment developed by California. Texture of road surfaces was measured using cores and linear traverse equipment. Binocular and petrographic microscopes were useful in studying paint and bead problems in the field and laboratory. Normal headlight angles were simulated using a vertical illuminator attachment on a microscope. This technique makes it possible to do much of the engineering of bead size to fit paint film thickness in the laboratory with a minimum of field tests being necessary. Internal fractures in beads are more detrimental to light retroreflection than are bubbles, impurities, or nonround beads. Kansas glass bead specifications have been changed, resulting in a lower unit price. Kansas now places a 10 mil wet paint film thickness with 4.0 lb of beads per gallon (0.48 kg of beads per liter) of paint. The speed of painting operations in the field has increased, and one crew has placed more than 118 mi (190 km) of beaded paint stripe in one 8-hr day. Savings in storage space, testing, and handling of paint and beads have occurred. Blowing air over the old paint stripe just ahead of the striper removes the loosest paint and thus increases paint and bead longevity. A SURVEY OF THE FINDINGS OF PRIOR LABORATORY STUDIES OF THE BEHAVIOR OF ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS UNDER VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL AND LOADING CONDITIONS IS BRIEFLY PRESENTED, AND THE COMMONLY USED COMPRESSION-DEFLECTION RELATIONSHIP AND DESIGN PROCEDURE ARE REVIEWED. THE THEORY AND CONCLUSIONS OF TWO ANALYATICAL STUDIES OF THE INFLUENCE OF FLEXIBLIE SUPPORTS (BY OTHERS) ARE SUMMARIZED AND COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF A STUDY OF A MODEL BRIDGE SPAN ON ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS. THE ANALYTICAL AND MODEL STUDIES INDICATED THAT ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS WOULD REDUCE BOTH THE FREQUENCY OF VIBRATION OF THE SUPPORTED SPAN AND THE FLEXURAL STRESS IN THE STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AT RESONANCE. WHILE THE ACCEPTED COMPRESSION-DEFLECTION RELATIONSHIP FOR ELASTOMERIC PADS WAS VERIFIED EXPERIMENTALLY IN THE SUBJECT STUDY FOR BOTH STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT DEFLECTIONS OF ACTUAL BEARINGS UNDER EITHER TYPE OF LOADING WOULD BE LESS THAN THOSE PREDICTED BY THE STANDARD DESIGN CURVES. THE EFFECT OF THE BEARINGS IN REDUCING THE FREQUENCY OF VIBRATION OF THE SPAN WAS FOUND TO BE SLIGHT. UNDER THE REALISTIC LOADING CONDITION UTILIZED, NO PRACTICAL ADVANTAGE WAS INDICATED IN REDUCED FLEXURAL STRESSES OR INCREASED DAMPING OF VIBRATIONS.
