T1 - Irradiation of Yarrowia lipolytica NRRL YB-567 creating novel strains with enhanced ammonia and oil production on protein and carbohydrate substrates.
AN - 1728667835; 26272089
AB - Increased interest in sustainable production of renewable diesel and other valuable bioproducts is redoubling efforts to improve economic feasibility of microbial-based oil production. Yarrowia lipolytica is capable of employing a wide variety of substrates to produce oil and valuable co-products. We irradiated Y. lipolytica NRRL YB-567 with UV-C to enhance ammonia (for fertilizer) and lipid (for biodiesel) production on low-cost protein and carbohydrate substrates. The resulting strains were screened for ammonia and oil production using color intensity of indicators on plate assays. Seven mutant strains were selected (based on ammonia assay) and further evaluated for growth rate, ammonia and oil production, soluble protein content, and morphology when grown on liver infusion medium (without sugars), and for growth on various substrates. Strains were identified among these mutants that had a faster doubling time, produced higher maximum ammonia levels (enzyme assay) and more oil (Sudan Black assay), and had higher maximum soluble protein levels (Bradford assay) than wild type. When grown on plates with substrates of interest, all mutant strains showed similar results aerobically to wild-type strain. The mutant strain with the highest oil production and the fastest doubling time was evaluated on coffee waste medium. On this medium, the strain produced 0.12 g/L ammonia and 0.20 g/L 2-phenylethanol, a valuable fragrance/flavoring, in addition to acylglycerols (oil) containing predominantly C16 and C18 residues. These mutant strains will be investigated further for potential application in commercial biodiesel production.

T1 - The Effect of Race/Ethnicity on Gestational Weight Gain
AN - 1673395349; PQ0001354730
AB - Minority women are gaining more weight than recommended during pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the risk of excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) in Hispanic and Black women compared to non-Hispanic women in Colorado. A retrospective cohort study of all birth records from 2007 to 2010 in Colorado was conducted. The primary outcome was GWG, and the exposure was race/ethnicity. Covariates were marital status, education, intensity of prenatal care, age, parity, tobacco use, alcohol use and years in the US. Chi square and multiple logistic regression was performed. 230,698 records were analyzed. Half of the Hispanic and Black women began their pregnancy overweight or obese. Hispanic women had a 0.84 (95 % CI 0.8-0.9) and Black women had a 0.95 (95 % CI 0.9-1.0) risk of excessive GWG than NHW women. Pre-pregnancy weight is an independent risk for adverse outcomes. The study findings provide healthcare providers focal points in preconception health care and programming.

T1 - Remote sensing-based models of soil vulnerability to compaction and erosion from off-highway vehicles
AN - 1765873265; 2016-011788
AB - Intensive off-road vehicle use for immigration, smuggling, and security of the United States-Mexico border has prompted concerns about long-term human impacts on sensitive desert ecosystems. To help managers identify areas susceptible to soil erosion from vehicle disturbances, we developed a series of erosion potential models based on factors from the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), with particular focus on the management factor (P-factor) and vegetation cover (C-factor). To better express the vulnerability of soils to human disturbances, a soil compaction index (applied as the P-factor) was calculated as the difference in saturated hydrologic conductivity (Ks) between disturbed and undisturbed soils, which was then scaled up to remote sensing-based maps of vehicle tracks and digital soils maps. The C-factor was improved using a satellite-based vegetation index, which was better correlated with estimated ground cover (r2=0.77) than data derived from regional land cover maps (r2=0.06). RUSLE factors were normalized to give equal weight to all contributing factors, which provided more management-specific information on vulnerable areas where vehicle compaction of sensitive soils intersects with steep slopes and low vegetation cover. Resulting spatial data on vulnerability and erosion potential provide land managers with information to identify critically disturbed areas and potential restoration sites where off-road driving should be restricted to reduce further degradation.

T1 - UNPACKING CYBERWAR: The Sufficiency of the Law of Armed Conflict in the Cyber Domain
AN - 1641844833; 2011-689260
AB - The term cyberwar is common in today's discussions of the national security challenges facing the United States and its allies. Understanding what law applies within the cyber domain is critical for all operational planners, whether or not they are directly involved in cyber operations. This article discusses the basics of how the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) affects cyber operations. It does not address the full spectrum of cyber operations, namely, defensive cyber operations and cyber exploitation (espionage activities). The focus is offensive cyber operations and the efficacy of existing international law in governing the use of cyber capabilities. Adapted from the source document.

T1 - Fostering Constructive Dialogue on Military Sexual Assault
AN - 1641842698; 2011-689253
AB - At a press conference in January 2012, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stated that he estimates there were 19,000 sexual assaults in the military in 2011.[1] That number is derived from a statement in the Department of Defense (DOD) Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military, Fiscal Year 2010.[2] The report does not actually explain its methodology for arriving at the number, but it does state the number is based on data from the Defense Manpower Data Center 2010 Workplace and Gender Relations Survey.[3] Perhaps more importantly, the report does not refer to 19,000 sexual assaults, but rather 19,000 reports by individuals of unwanted sexual contact. T1 - Cool Hand Nuke: Lessons From the Quiet Diplomacy of the Cienfuegos Non-Crisis
AN - 1417542823; 2011-442824
AB - How does presidential framing and signaling of problems affect the potential solutions available to solve those problems? For example, the Cuban Missile Crisis was immediately labeled a crisis and limited alternative solutions. Conversely, the Cienfuegos submarine base dilemma of 1970-despite having graver potential consequences-was never framed as a crisis, was out of the public eye, and was equally successful at repealing a Soviet threat. We offer a Force Dilemma model that suggests the president's problem definition process should produce crisis classifications sparingly, considering and employing less confrontational instruments of power, without prematurely sending unnecessary signals to adversaries, contemporaries, and the public. T1 - The Maturation of Afghan Historiography
AN - 1417525649; 201323712
AB - The fate of Afghanistan's written history has been interconnected with the progression and regression of the Afghan state's ability to live with its past as much as with its present. Afghan historiography, in both the official and unofficial versions, has generally sought to "prove" or "disprove" the official versions of Afghanistan's evolving national narrative rather than be, in the words of Edward H. Carr, "a continuous process of interaction between the historian and his facts, an unending dialogue between the present and the past." Despite unprecedented freedoms of expression and exposure to international methods of research, post-Taliban Afghanistan still seems far from coming to terms with its past. One particular trend continues to haunt the country as it tries to move forward in deconstructing or reinventing its history: official Afghan narratives continue to downplay or ignore the violent and divisive period commencing with the 1973 coup that ended the country's monarchical system. AN - 1038042830; 201208512
AB - In 2007, Roberta I. Schaffer, then executive director of The Federal Library and Information Network (FEDLINK), charged the HRWG with creating the original competencies for federal librarians. For more than a year, a working group met at least once a month for a full workday to develop these competencies. This article discusses the work done in creating a new set of competencies for federal librarians, why the process was important, and lessons learned. Adapted from the source document.

T1 - Creating an "Atmosphere of Objectivity": Radio in the American Sector, Objectivity and the United States' Propaganda Campaign against the German Democratic Republic, 1945-1961
AN - 1030863149; 201217183
AB - Radio broadcasting played a critical role in the 'cultural' Cold War waged by the Western and Eastern bloc powers. Nowhere was this clearer than in divided Berlin, where stations on both sides of the Iron Curtain vied with one another to define the political narrative and shape public opinion. The American-funded broadcaster RIAS Berlin quickly became one of the most important elements of the United States propaganda offensive against the German Democratic Republic. Founded in 1946, RIAS was reportedly one of the most popular sources for news and information in the German Democratic Republic throughout the 1950s. Listeners in East Germany saw RIAS as an objective alternative to East Germany's state-run, overtly propagandistic media organs, despite the fact that RIAS was a propaganda broadcaster itself. Using RIAS's news broadcasts as a case study, this essay examines the nature and impact of American propaganda on East Germany and the Soviet Bloc during the early Cold War. Drawing on surveys, letters, and polls of East German listening habits conducted by American and West German agencies, this essay argues that RIAS's popularity stemmed from its staff's decision to present news programming that balanced anti-communism with an 'objective' tone and style of presentation. For RIAS'S staff, 'objective' reporting entailed broadcasts that presented accurate information that also undermined the legitimacy of the East German state. In doing this, RIAS was able to find a substantial audience willing to embrace the station's anti-communist programming and its attacks on the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). T1 - Evaluating Precision of Cementum Annuli Analysis for Aging Mule Deer from Southern California
AN - 904491693; 15518853
AB - We evaluated the precision of age estimates produced by cementum annuli analysis (CAA) of blind-duplicate specimens taken from 994 southern mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) collected over 15 years. We found that the mean annual proportion of unreliably aged incisor pairs was greater for females (0.48, SD = 0.13) than for males (0.22, SD = 0.07). Most of the 308 unreliably aged tooth pairs disagreed by only 1 year. Sex, precipitation, and certainty codes assigned by Matson's Lab to the age estimates were the best predictors for agreement of estimated ages within incisor pairs. Our estimated overall age error rate of CAA (17%) was >2 times as large as estimated error rates from Montana and South Dakota, but less than half of error rates estimated for Mississippi and south Texas. Knowing the error rate of age estimates from a specific deer population allows wildlife managers to perform tasks requiring specific age class information such as monitoring the harvest rate of older female deer in a hunted population or performing population reconstruction.

T1 - German Counter-Insurgency Revisited
AN - 875715507; 201111371
AB - In recent years, some of the most enduring interpretations of World War II have been subject to revision. Indeed, military historians are using innovative and often inter-disciplinary methods to answer original questions, and offer new perspectives in established debates. With advances in Holocaust studies and departures from the evidence presented at Nuremberg, this allows German occupation policies to be reconsidered. Conditions that were specific were separated from general circumstances in occupation campaigns. New background in German experience in suppressing rebellion in World War II is presented. With the understanding that Clausewitz saw defense as stronger than offense, the author argues that this was behind a German preference for conflicts of annihilation or destruction, particularly in dealing with rebellion. This article considers: 1) Background (1831-1932)-from Clausewitz and experience up through World War I; 2) Doctrine (1933-1945)-from what was available in Germany; and 3) Practice (1942-1944)-from specific examples, in this case by revisiting operational history in one tertiary theater: Yugoslavia, the German Southeast Theater. T1 - Limited War and the Ugandan Experience: Implications for African Security
AN - 831089247; 2010-613657
AB - Modern military theory has neglected to incorporate African examples in its discourse. This paper will attempt to address this issue arguing that the Clausewitzian idea of limited war serves as a useful lens though which warfare in one African country, Uganda, can be examined. By using limited war as a foundation of understanding, it becomes clear that warfare in Uganda, and much of Africa, is population centric and requires that the security of the civilian population be the center of gravity of military operations. Thus, this reality calls for a fundamental reexamination of military strategy in many African wars. Adapted from the source document.

AN - 837449322; 2010-11341
AB - Joint force commanders (JFCs) have routinely exercised authority to reorganize and break apart attached forces under the guise of operational control (OPCON). This exercise has become common practice because of misinterpretations of joint doctrine;, specifically, many officers believe that the authority to direct the internal organization of an attached force is contained within the jointly defined authorities of operational control. This belief is fallacious. Tables, Figures. Adapted from the source document.

T1 - Understanding the North Korean Military Threat to the Security of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia: Declined or Evolved?
AN - 59996156; 200921187
AB - There has been a debate in recent years about the threat that North Korea poses. This paper addresses that question by conducting analysis on all of Pyongyang's conventional and missile forces. First it examines the command and control of the military, and the role the military plays in government. It will also examine the disposition of forces of Pyongyang's military forces and why this poses a threat to South Korea and the region. Finally, a study is made on how conventional and missile forces have been reorganized in recent years in order to pose a more credible threat to the ROK-U.S. alliance. It is apparent based on the evidence discussed, that despite the primitive state of many of North Korea's systems compared to the United States and South Korea, Pyongyang has adjusted by developing asymmetric capabilities, and by massing key forces in forward positions from which they could be launched with little or no warning. T1 - The International Proscription Against Torture And The United States' Categorical And Qualified Responses
AN - 58830478; 2008-399800
AB - Although the prohibition against torture is a jus cogens and proscribed by multiple international treaties and United States law, such bans did not prevent the torture of detainees in United States' custody. For a state truly to protect people from torture, it must rely less on definitions and prohibitions and turn to leadership and policy; proscriptions by themselves cannot stop torture-only leadership and policy can. In the case of detainees held by the United States during the war on terror, presidential leadership created an environment that allowed torture, and it was not curtailed until presidential leadership stopped it. T1 - All Our Eggs in a Broken Basket: How the Human Terrain System is Undermining Sustainable Military Cultural Competence
AN - 58811234; 2008-285210
AB - Field-experienced warfighters and other experts in operational art have identified a range of weaknesses in U.S. military cultural training, education, and intelligence. Finding an effective and lasting solution to these shortcomings has framed the latest phase of an ongoing debate over how to meet operational cultural requirements. One approach argues for comprehensive change, applying recent doctrine to long-term knowledge and cultural terrain analysis programs. The other side of the debate, represented by the advocates of the Human Terrain System (HTS), calls for an immediate solution in the form of nonorganic personnel, new equipment, and the direct application of external academic support. This approach is inconsistent with standing doctrine and ignores recent improvements in military cultural capabilities. It is argued that the military should expand its organic, sustainable cultural expertise rather than waste resources on external academics. Adapted from the source document.

AB - Lieutenant General George Flynn reflects on the ongoing challenge when cultural change meets the immutable nature of war. This essay details how the US Marine Corps is working to ensure that the greatest loyalty of Marines is to the Constitution and the principles that undergird it and posits that irregular warfare places an increased premium on values -- It supports this claim by reporting the results of the Army's Mental Health Assessment Team. AN - 58797276; 2008-224382

(2) Use Web-based applications to record testing & completion of books by grade. (3) Commanders & resident schools sponsor book discussions. After some background on the program, attention is given to the role of commanders, the notion of followership, & counterarguments to adding more requirements to individual Marines. AB - A few months later, a January 2003 change to the Unified Command Plan assigned USStratCom the following additional missions: global strike and missile defense; global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) network operations; information operations (IO); and the integration and synchronization of Department of Defense (DoD) efforts in combating weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The USStratCom commander advocates desired characteristics and capabilities for global missile defense and missile warning for all CoComs.\n A few IO benefits to the Corps and others include: * A link for warfighters to leverage DoD IO capabilities as well as those of other organizations-DIA and National Security Agency, for example. * Rapidly deployable, tailored CoCom and JTF support teams to augment IO cells. * Assistance with strategic IO planning and theater engagement. * IO targeting support. * Coordinated and integrated IO intelligence preparation of the environment.

T1 - WEARING BLUE DOESN'T SUPPORT TROOPS
AN - 387632895
AB - The e-mail in question was asking me to wear blue on Fridays. Photos of a flag-draped casket of a dead Marine being unloaded from a plane; another showed the widow sleeping next to the casket. Heart-wrenching to be sure, but what does wearing blue have to do with supporting the troops? It seems to have as much significance as having a magnetic ribbon on the back of one's car. All of these superficial acts serve only to allow the American public to feel good about themselves. However, these acts do nothing to actually support those in harm's way.

T1 - 'Leathernecks Ashore!' The United States Marine Corps and Revolutionary Russia, 1917-1919 Diplomatic Couriers and Embassy Guards
AN - 59822096; 200826011
AB - During the time of turbulence and revolution engulfing Russia as it evolved from Tsarist Empire to Bolshevik Soviet Union, the personnel assigned to the US Embassy and associated consulates throughout Russia offered a convenient 'window' through which the US and others in the West could view and ponder the momentous developments under way. Among the most useful of those personnel were representatives of the US Marine Corps assigned to protect those diplomatic missions. This article exploits the records, letters, and reports of the Marine Corps detachments and their officers and men to offer a unique perspective regarding those revolutionary times. It also serves as a stark reminder of the cruel realities inherent in urban combat and the difficulties associated with military occupation and conducting counterinsurgency among a shrewd and determined enemy. T1 - MV-22B Osprey: A Strategic Leap Forward
AN - 58768794; 2008-144577
AB - Technological innovation produces the qualitative advantages that allow US airpower to overmatch superior adversary numbers while minimizing the exposure of military personnel to casualty and capture. The most recent example of this central feature of airpower, the MV22 Osprey, has been deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom entering the airpower arsenal against long odds, and Colonel Walters makes the case that the MV22 has exceeded expectations in the first iteration of an aircraft that is undoubtedly destined to produce numerous variants and commercial spinoffs into the future. T1 - Fluorescence changes in remineralized and nonremineralized enamel adjacent to glass ionomer ART restorations: an in vitro study.
AN - 70134253; 18482517
AB - PURPOSEThe purpose of this study was to evaluate fluorescence changes of remineralized and nonremineralized enamel margins adjacent to glass ionomer restorations during a pH cycling sequence.METHODSOne hundred permanent molar and premolar teeth were placed in a demineralizing solution for 3 days and restored with a glass ionomer restoration (simulating Atraumatic Restorative Treatment [ART]). Half were placed in a remin solution for 7 days to create a remineralization (remin) group. Specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups (N=25): (a) 2 remin groups; and (b) 2 nonremin groups. One half of the remin and nonremin group specimens were treated with a 5,000-ppm sodium fluoride solution during pH cycling with remin fluid and an acidic beverage over 20 days. Fluorescence changes were recorded with quantitative light fluorescence (QLF). Higher fluorescence values indicated less lesion porosity. Statistical comparisons between the groups over the 5 measurement sessions of cycling were performed using repeated measures of analysis of variance with a post-hoc test, paired-sample t test and 2-sample t tests (alpha=0.05).RESULTSThe remin groups experienced significantly less lesion porosity than the nonremin groups. Fluoride groups experienced less lesion porosity than the nonfluoride groups.CONCLUSIONSA brief period of remineralization and use of a prescription strength fluoridated rinse improved the enamel substrate surrounding glass ionomer restorations, resulting in less lesion porosity.

AN - 58763853; 2008-144527
AB - American military success in the future is likely to depend on tactical success, the empowerment of small unit leaders, and a mindset change to maximize the evolving capabilities of modern technology. The vital human factor of trust to empower a subordinate, depend on him to complete his mission, and fulfill his intelligence collection and reporting requirements is needed for modern militaries to maximize their potential. T1 - American Armed Forces' Service Culture Impact on Close Air Support
AN - 59930001; 2007-03270
AB - US service culture as well as the challenges of recent modernization efforts impact the execution of Close Air Support (CAS), a difficult endeavor defined in Joint doctrine as "air action by fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft against hostile targets that are in close proximity to friendly forces and which require detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces." This study categorizes and compares the services' characterizations and conduct of CAS; both from the ground and airborne perspectives; analyzes the conclusions and findings of several reports; analyzes the observations of combat-experienced terminal controllers; and makes recommendations. T1 - When Peacekeepers Fail Thousands Are Going to Die. The ETO in Rwanda: A Story of Deception
AN - 59713067; 200613355
AB - The effects of the withdrawal of Belgian peacekeepers in Kigali, Rwanda, upon the failure of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda to prevent the massacre of hundred of thousands of Tutsis & dissident Hutus in 1994 are contemplated. Several errors made prior to the operations launch are highlighted: mission leaders' inability to acquire sufficient troops & logistical resources to adequately perform peacekeeping functions; Tunisian soldiers' arrival in Rwanda without their weapons; Bangladeshi soldiers not being properly trained before arriving & exhibiting poor performance in completing their duties in Rwanda; & mission leaders' formulation of a nebulous Rules of Engagement. Events that occurred on April 6 & April 7, 1994 (eg, the assassination of Rwandan President Habyarimana) that precipitated chaos in Rwanda are reviewed; circumstances that encouraged the Belgian contingent to remove its peacekeepers from Rwanda are also discussed. It is speculated that the Belgian peacekeepers overestimated the severity of the threat posed by the Rwandan revolutionary movement & that their continued presence in Rwanda could have saved the lives of thousands of Tutsis & dissident Hutus. T1 - Small Wars Revisited: The United States and Nontraditional Wars
AN - 59711627; 200606326
AB - Despite its own extensive experience in nontraditional wars, the United States has rarely excelled at this portion of the conflict spectrum in the past half century. Its current conventional military superiority will ensure that it gets much more experience in today's Small Wars Century, an era that began in the 1950s with the rise of revolutionary warfare. For several decades, thanks in large part due to lingering myths from the Vietnam war, this area has been a conceptual & intellectual orphan in US professional military institutions. Without understanding the past, & how new conditions impact the relevance of this experience as a guide, US military planners & policy makers will be unable to translate America's intentions into effective campaigns. Without a sound grasp of history & the characteristics of nontraditional war as part of the overall social phenomena of war, the US will continue to find its overwhelming military dominance irrelevant to its most pressing security interests. T1 - The Guard and Reserve in America's New Missions
AN - 60669971; 200514421
AB - Replacing outdated Cold War assumptions in the organization & use of the Armed services, especially regarding the guard & reserve units of the military given the changed environment & objectives of United States domestic & international security concerns, with a war-fighting readiness to support international and, particularly, homeland security needs should be at the center of a remodeled approach to war-fighting. The explanation & justification of this "new kind of war" & redefining of the reserve role that responds to enemies that are defined by dynamic, unpredictable, & adaptive fighting strategies & technologies in contrast to the "old war" opponents defined by static, homogeneous, hierarchical, & rigid approaches, is established by reviewing four strategic models: Military Revolutionaries, Classical Republicans, Traditionalists, & Democratic Globalists. A proposal to develop a reserve military component that is already trained, alert & ready for deployment -- no need for mobilization in this process -- in order to provide stability & support internationally & ensure Homeland Security domestically concludes the essay. 1 Table, 1 Figure. T1 - Top Secret War: Rhodesian Special Operations
AN - 60678119; 200513847
AB - The self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia in Africa fought a low-intensity conflict for more than a decade as part of its bid for independence & dominance of its African majority population by a European minority. Crucial to this was a small professional armed force (police, Army & Air Force) that was able to provide internal security, border control & conduct successful counter-insurgency operations within its own borders. When the Frontline States of Zambia, Botswana & Mozambique provided active sanctuary & sustenance for nationalist forces, the Rhodesians launched external operations spearheaded to a large extent by its special forces to 'detect, destroy, delay, disrupt & deceive' terrorists or guerillas. In the end, Rhodesian special forces were the supported rather than a supporting effort. 2 Figures, 1 Appendix, 92 References. Adapted from the source document.

T1 - Civil-Military Relations in the Republic of Korea: Background and Implications
AN - 60143223; 200615767
AB - Civil-Military relations in South Korea has been a topic of discussion, particularly since the spring of 2004, among many in policy & academic circles both in the Republic of Korea, & key allies -- particularly the United States. In order to understand the challenges & problems that have been inherent in the Civil-Military relationship in South Korea since 2004, one must first address the unique & rather unprecedented leadership style of Roh Moo-hyun -- & the historical reasons behind the policy moves he has made. It is also important to understand the strengths & weaknesses that the current President brings to the Blue House. Roh's decision-making process is radically different than any of those who have previously served in the Blue House. An analysis of this unique decision-making process & how it has altered the way policy is made (particularly foreign policy & its impact on the current civil-military relationship) will be made in this paper. Other important factors in the current Civil-Military relationship include the vision of the National Security Council, the future of military reform, & current signs of Roh's vision to severely alter the status of the current Civil-Military relationship. All of these factors will be examined in detail in this paper. Figures, References. Adapted from the source document.

T1 - International Criminal Law after Rome: Concerns from a U.S. Military Perspective
AN - 60594109; 200116882
AB - It is contended that the Rome Treaty for the International Criminal Court (ICC) problematizes US military involvement in international disputes & exigencies since the ICC possesses the capacity to delegate jurisdiction over nonmembers' nationals. Several concerns identified by the US military prior to the Rome Treaty negotiations are reviewed, eg, the ICC's ability to prosecute certain crimes without acknowledging the UN Security Council. Although various nations have criticized the US's unwillingness to grant the ICC jurisdiction over nonmembers' nationals, it is countered that such countries fail to recognize the US's unique national security concerns, especially those regarding international peacekeeping. Several shortcomings present within the finished Rome Treaty are subsequently identified, eg, the ability of nations who accept the treaty to protect their nationals from crimes not presently listed in the document. The implications of the ICC's establishment for other international institutions, especially the UN Security Council, are then considered. It is speculated that the incorporation of certain checks & balances on the ICC's power may induce the US to sign the Rome Treaty. J. W. Parker

T1 - Public health assessment for USMC Marine Corps Recruit Depot (a/k/a Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot), Parris Island, Beaufort County, South Carolina, Region 4, CERCLIS No. SC6170022762
AN - 52656394; 1998-002483
AB - Marine Corps Recruit Depot, (MCRD) Parris Island was proposed for listing on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Priorities List in August 1994. We identified two areas where chemical contaminants in soil entered the surface water wetland areas and bioaccumulated in edible fish and shellfish species: (1) contaminated fish and shellfish at the Causeway Landfill (Site 3) and (2) contaminated shellfish near the Rifle Range. These exposure situations pose no apparent public health hazard due to the low levels of contaminants detected in fish and shellfish. However, because the landfill has no impermeable cap nor leachate collection system, it is not known whether contaminants in fish and shellfish will increase over time. The remaining 57 contaminated areas pose no public health hazard because people are not coming in contact with contaminants.
