JO - Curator JF - Curator Y1 - 2006/10// VL - 49 IS - 4 M3 - Article SP - 449 EP - 462 SN - 00113069 AB - This article explores the act of collecting from a postmodern perspective by examining the influences of changing times, places, and persons. Considering the British Museum's stages of development and progress, it discusses the life of Sir Hans Sloane and how his actions helped determine the museum's original goals for its collection. The early days of the British Museum provide a clear view into the values of seventeenth, and eighteenth-century British society. The focus of the museum's collection has changed over the years with the changing views of academics and society. The museum today still strives to hold knowledge of all things, yet tempers this goal under the pressures of modern theorists and politics. While still desiring to communicate information about the world from vast and complex collections, the museum has shifted its focus to answer questions of ownership and entitlement. Explaining national and world heritage views, the article concludes with a discussion of the ethics of collecting as a primary factor in today's British Museum collection. JO - Pioneer America Society Transactions JF - Pioneer America Society Transactions Y1 - 2004/10// VL - 27 M3 - Article SP - 42 EP - 63 SN - 08843309 AB - Chronicles the development of New York's Hudson and Manhattan Railroad, which links Manhattan and New Jersey by train and was founded in 1908. The railroad saw hard financial times in the first half of the century, but under the direction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey beginning in 1962, it became a stable income generator, thanks in large part to its link to the World Trade Center. Its groundbreaking employment of tunnels under the Hudson River using the Greathead shield technique paved the way for similar transportation routes throughout the state. Tainter and G. John Lucas regarding the significant concept, which is considered as the key element of historic preservation and conservation archaeology in the U.S. It explores the legislation that governs the inclusion of a given property in the National Register Historic Places (NRHP). Moreover, the author agrees with Tainter and Lucas that the criteria in determining whether a property is eligible or significant for inclusion in the register need reform. A guide to preservation information Y1 - 1982/// M3 - Book AB - Where to Look: A Guide to Preservation Information is a bibliographic essay dealing with the ballooning of recent publications and resources on this topic. This work lists and briefly annotates resources that have appeared mostly since the publication of Rath and O'Connell's five-volume A Bibliography on Historic Organizational Practices in 1975. It first lists basic introductory works and general bibliographies in the field, then cites institutional sources of information and handbooks. The bulk of the work focuses on five main functional categories: identifying and recording cultural resources; protective strategies; preserving and restoring the structural fabric; publicity, interpretation, and media.
