This standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 136 'Sports, playground and other recreational equipment' (Secretariat: Germany).

The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Sport- und Freizeitgerat (Sports Equipment Standards Committee), Technical Committee Turngerate, Matten und Spielfeldgerate.

Gymnastic equipment falls within the scope of the Gerätesicherheitsgesetz. Once compliance with the safety requirements specified therein has been verified by an accredited test house designated by the Bundesminister für Arbeit und Sozialordnung (German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs), the equipment may be marked with the symbol GS = Geprüfte Sicherheit (Safety tested) mark.
